Gourmet GowerGower saltmarsh Lamb
Gower Samphire
On the Northern Coast of the Gower lie the Salt Marshes which are rich in plantlife such as Saltmarsh Grasses,Samphire,Sorrel,Sea Lavender and Thrift.
The Lamb produced in this region therefore has a distintive flavour and tenderness. This has been produced for generations at Weobley Castle near the village of Leason on the Gower. The Samphire itself is a local delicacy, it is a great addition to a freshly caught and cooked plate of Salt Marsh cockles.Another local delicacy is Laverbread which is made from seaweed and tastes a bit like oysters and olives but it is more of an acquired taste. Farming and selling fruit and veg runs in the blood of the Watkins family. So it comes as no surprise that Cwmcerrig Farm Shop and Grill, which they opened near Cross Hands in 2009, has become a popular pit stop for locals and visitors to the area. You could do your weekly shop in this vast emporium of local produce, which stocks everything from vegetables dug up in local fields to hand-patted Welsh butter, and features an award-winning butchery that sells best cuts of the Watkins’ own Texel lamb and Hereford beef. After you’ve made your purchases, pull up a seat in the café-grill for breakfast, lunch or a light snack, chosen from its well-priced, home-made menu. The food is good, but the views through the huge glass windows of the surrounding countryside make this an even more appetizing place to take a break. All this and you’re just 10 minutes from the M4, so shopping for local produce couldn’t be more convenient. Public access: Mon-Sat, 8.30am-5pm; Sun & bank hols, 10am-4pm. Phone orders can be taken for local delivery and there will soon be the option to order meat boxes and produce hampers online.
